Artist Bio

Quaid Foshee is an artist currently enrolled in Millsaps College as an undergraduate student in Jackson, Mississippi. He is originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, but spends the majority of his time now in Jackson, Mississippi. Quaid has been exploring drawing and painting from a very young age, but became more serious about his practice during his senior year of high school, which is when he decided to explore his practice more at Millsaps College. His practice is centered around the human experience in both personal and external endeavors. His work is primarily portraiture in the mediums of drawing and painting where he explores the use of expression, color, and technique to capture emotion. Quaid's inspiration derives from his own experiences and past trauma as well as the use of interviewing others regarding their mental health and self image. Quaid Foshee can be contacted via email, quaidfoshee@gmail.com, or through direct message on the Instagram linked down below in the Social section.

Artist statement

Personal and shared experience is what truly drives me to create. My creative interests have always been drawn to portraiture. Through my exploration of portraiture over time, portraying emotion through expression, color, and composition within portraiture have become my staple.

My primary mediums are drawing and painting. Specifically, I have always created realistic forms and rarely have strayed far from this. I enjoy interpreting what is real, and while doing so, creating compositions that display emotions derived from experiences of personal endeavors throughout my life or the shared experiences of others. I find that portraiture is the best form of capturing emotion because of the identifiable expressions one can make. The most important part of this process is taking my own photographs for reference and positioning either myself or another person in ways that I feel best fit the experience that I am either re-living or interpreting.

My more recent works have been more inclusive of using interviewing as a tool in my creative process. Other perspectives and viewpoints on a topic have strengthened my understanding and have allowed me to create pieces that I would not be capable of creating on my own. Specifically in my recent interest in mental health and body image, I want my work to be relatable to the viewer, and by collecting other viewpoints it allows me to further show the viewer they are not alone in their endeavors.
